The town mark for Chester is a shield bearing the arms of the city; an erect sword surrounded by three sheaves of wheat. Early examples of Chester town mark depict a shield with three lions on one side and a sheaf of wheat on the other.

A Goldsmiths guild has operated in Chester since the 15th century, overseeing the assaying and sale of silver plate. In 1701 through an official Act of Parliament, the Chester Assay office was established. Prior to this period marks found on items from Chester were similar to London marks. The Chester assay office was officially closed in 1962.
