Silver Hallmarks In Dublin

The town mark for Dublin is a crowned harp. In 1731, the mark was altered by adding the figure of Hibernia and thereafter has remained the same, unaffected by the 1973 British Hallmark Act.

Items produced in Dublin make up the whole range of silver craft, exhibiting excellent workmanship and expertly crafted decorative features. After the Edict of Nantes in 1685, Dublin became a refuge for many goldsmiths fleeing France. Their distinct influence can be traced through Irish silverworks throughout the 18th century.

Although gold and silverwork can be found in Ireland dating to 1800 BC, a governing body was not established until the 17th century. The Dublin Assay Office, located in Dublin Castle, was first established by the royal charter of Charles I on 22nd December 1637.
