Silver Hallmarks In Sheffield

The town mark for Sheffield is a crown prior to 1974, and a Yorkshire rosette thereafter. A date letter accompanies the crown town mark, but date letters varied irregularly until 1824 when they were arranged alphabetically.

Sheffield is most notable for its cutlery and decorative plate. Closely tied with the steel industry, it was here that Thomas Bolsover invented a technique for fuse plating, better known as Sheffield Plate. A vast majority of Sheffield flatware dating after the late 19th century was mass-produced in conjunction with the cutlery trade.
